Greece is known as a reptile paradise and one of the top herping destinations in Europe. From alpine and forest habitats to tiny, isolated islands in the Aegean sea, this country hosts about 100 species of European, African and Asian origin, while several are endemic to Greece. Although the very diverse landscape and the great variety of herpetofauna species make the country the perfect destination for herpers, herping is the least popular activity in Greece, with only a small amount of herpers being active in the country.
'Hellenolacerta' is a project created by a small group of greek herpers and wildlife photographers with the aim of uniting herpers from Greece and all around the globe as well as showing the richness of the greek herpetofauna. The name of the website means "Hellenic (Greek) lizard" and was inspired by a reptile species endemic to the Peloponnese peninsula, the Greek Rock Lizard (Hellenolacerta graeca) which is very representative of the greek herpetofauna's uniqueness.
This website was created to share photography, herping trip reports, educational articles and information regarding the reptile & amphibian diversity of Greece. The project is primarily open for herpers and other wildlife enthusiasts with experience on greek herpetofauna to join and contribute. Cyprus content is also welcome.
